Matt Cruse is the cabin boy of the Aurora, a 900-foot luxury airship. During a crossing over the Pacificus, he rescues the unconscious pilot of a crippled hot air balloon who, before dying, tells him about the creatures he has seen flying through the clouds. When Kate de Vries comes aboard to prove the story, Matt is caught up in the quest.
