Summer on verdant Vancouver Island gets off to a rocky start with the discovery of the body of a homeless man. RCMP Corporal Holly Martin notices drug paraphernalia nearby, and the autopsy reveals death from a combination of heroin and a synthetic opiate. Information leads Holly to believe that he had hidden something of value at the site of his death.

It's high summer in the north, where everyone is bear bait, even the bears. Gunshots chase Belle Palmer from her quiet forest paths. Then, on her remote lakeside road, the savage and unexplained murder of an elderly neighbour puts her on guard against two-footed killers.

Belle Palmer's old high school boyfriend, Gary Myers, moves to her Sudbury street - he's studying the behaviour of elk in the wilderness. He's soon found mysteriously drowned, while someone has broken into his cottage, taking a camera and laptop. A clipping about poisoning on reserves leads Belle, a real estate agent and amateur detective, to visit the place of his demise and find out what really happened to Gary.

While showing a home, Northern Ontario realtor Belle Palmer discovers a woman strangled in the bathtub, the third break-and-enter death to occur. The victim's only child, 12-year-old Micro, stays with Belle's neighbours but disappears one night after an argument. Belle hooks up with a bumbling PI to search the bush, chased by murderers who will stop at nothing to protect a multi-million-dollar criminal empire.

RCMP Corporal Holly Martin takes charge of her first post, a detachment in tiny Fossil Bay on the wild south coast of Vancouver Island. Drunk drivers, speeders and the occasional theft from tourist cars lead the crime roster, but her first day starts with a distress call. A scuba diver has found the body of a girl in the surf. A tragic drowning caused by a fall? c2008.

For Maddie Temple, a literature professor at a small Michigan university, the new school year gets off to a rocky start, with the death of a student (who plummeted from one of the library's top floors). Then a top university administrator dies under suspicious circumstances, with the disliked coordinator of the English department becoming the prime suspect. Maggie turns amateur detective to figure out who is behind the strange happenings and uncover a killer.
